2 Weeks Before Treatment
Proper preparation is key to getting the best results and avoiding complications. Start preparing two weeks before your appointment.
Avoid Sun Exposure
No tanning (sun, beds, or spray tans). Wear SPF 50+ daily on treatment areas and cover up with clothing when outside. No self-tanner or bronzing lotions.
Why? Tanned skin has more melanin, which competes with hair for laser absorption. This increases burn risk and decreases effectiveness.
Check Your Medications
Some medications can make your skin photosensitive. Check with your provider about photosensitizing medications, retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin), and certain antibiotics.
1 Week Before Treatment
- No chemical peels or microdermabrasion
- No glycolic acid or AHAs on treatment area
- No harsh exfoliants
- No waxing or sugaring (this removes the hair follicle we need!)
24 Hours Before Treatment
Shave the Treatment Area
This is THE most important prep step! The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle (root). Hair above skin absorbs energy meant for the follicle. Unshaved hair equals less effective treatment plus more discomfort.
Use a fresh, clean razor, shave in direction of hair growth, use gentle shaving cream, and rinse thoroughly after. Important: DON'T pluck, wax, or use depilatories! These remove the follicle, and we need it there to target.
Day of Treatment
- Shower and cleanse treatment area thoroughly
- Remove ALL lotions, creams, oils, makeup
- No deodorant (if treating underarms)
- No perfumes or scented products
- Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing
- Stay hydrated - drink plenty of water
- Optional: Take ibuprofen 30 minutes before if concerned about discomfort
What to Bring

- Comfortable clothing
- Sunglasses (if treating face)
- Any questions you want to ask
