The Science of Selective Photothermolysis
Laser hair removal works through a process called selective photothermolysis. This fancy term simply means using light energy to target specific tissues while leaving surrounding areas unharmed.
Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle
To understand why multiple sessions are needed, you need to know about the hair growth cycle:
Anagen Phase (Growth)
This is the active growth phase when hair is connected to its blood supply. This is the only phase when laser treatment is effective.
Catagen Phase (Transition)
Hair stops growing and detaches from the blood supply.
Telogen Phase (Resting)
Hair falls out naturally before the cycle begins again.
Only 20-30% of your hair is in the anagen phase at any time, which is why 6-8 sessions are typically needed.
Why It's Different from Other Methods
- Shaving: Only cuts hair at the surface
- Waxing: Removes hair but doesn't damage the follicle
- Laser: Damages the follicle to prevent regrowth
